Compulsory Basic Training

The first steps towards your motorcycle licence
Compulsory Basic Training is provided on a daily basis and must be prebooked.
A booking fee of £50.00 must be paid at time of booking and becomes
non-refundable
48 hours prior to the start of the course.

The course consists of five elements:
(A) Introduction
Aims of the course, equipment and clothing

(B) Practical on site training
Controls, basic machine knowledge and operation.
(C) Practical on site riding
Off-road tuition and exercises
(D) Practical on road training
Highway code and Roadcraft
(E) Practical on road riding
On-road
tuition and assessment with radio link.

All CBT courses start at 09:30. Pupils must bring with them both parts of their licence
or if a paper licence it must have valid provisional
entitlement for category "A"(motorcycles).
Standard boots(NOT HIGH HEELS OR PLATFORM SOLES) and a strong
pair of trousers(e.g. jeans) should be worn.

A standard eyesight test will be conducted before commencing the course, please bring
glasses or contact lenses if worn.

As the course follows a syllabus set out by the Driving Standards Agency and element (E),
the on-road training part of the course runs for a minimum period of 2 hours, the finish
time will vary between 16:30 to 18:30.

On successfully completing the course a DL196 certificate of completion will be issued. This
is valid for two years* and will validate provisional entitlement on driving licence.

Should the candidate fail to reach the required standard in one day, a further 4 hours of
training will be provided at no extra charge. Further training if required will be charged at
the normal hourly rate.

Pupils may use their own bikes for the course do so providing it meets the required legal
standards. The certificate of insurance, MOT certificate (if older than 3 years) must be
produced and the tax disk displayed on the left side of the bike with "L" plates fitted front
and rear. The machine will be inspected by the instructor and must meet his/her satisfaction
before you will be allowed to use it for the course.

*Changes - Effective February 2001
From the 1st February 2001, CBT certificates will be valid for 2 years from the date of issue.
Drivers wishing to ride a moped will require a CBT to validate full moped entitlement if the
car licence was obtained after the 1st of February 2001, in this case CBT certificate will be
valid for the life of the licence.
